We change, rekey, and fix the locks on apartments and houses around University Heights.
When should I call a locksmith about my home?
- You just moved in and do not know who still has a key.
- A roommate or tenant moved out.
- Your keys went missing.
- The lock has started to stick, or you have to jiggle the key.
- You want a second lock or a stronger cylinder on the door.
What kind of locks do you work on?
Mostly the plain mortise locks found on Bronx apartment doors: a tall brass plate, a round cylinder, and a knob below it. We also work on deadbolts, doorknob locks, and the front door locks of houses. Nothing about these locks is fancy, and that is fine. A good plain lock in good shape does the job.
Do I need a new lock or just new keys?
If the lock works well and you only want the old keys to stop working, a rekey is enough. If it is worn out or broken, we replace it with one that fits the same door, so you are not left with extra holes.
What happens on the job?
Your call and your photo tell us which parts to bring. When we get to the door, we point out what is worn or broken and tell you what we plan to do. Then we do the work and try every lock and key with you before we pack up.
Questions we get
Can I rekey instead of replacing?
Often, yes. Same lock, new keys, and the old keys stop working. A photo of the lock tells us a lot.
Can I get extra keys?
Yes. We can leave you copies from the job, and you can bring a key to our shop inside Tejada Hardware for more.
Do I need my landlord to agree?
Check your lease first if you rent. Many buildings ask for a copy of the new key.
